5:30 pm Introduce – Mary Botkin (94 years young) 5:45 pm Personal stories about Miss Gertrude and the House 6:00 pm Self-guided Tour 6:45 – 7:00 pm Return to the Living Room for Questions Mary Botkin, the daughter of Mary Fulton Bennett, a close friend of Miss Gertrude Smith, grew up in the neighborhood and will share intimate stories about the Smith family and the home. Built in 1903, this beautiful home was updated by heir and interior decorator Miss Gertrude Smith who worked with prestigious decorating firms in New York. Furnishings, accessories, and artwork are displayed just as they were when the family lived there. The house, decorated for Christmas, is a “living museum” in perpetual care and operated by the Gilmer-Smith Foundation and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This event, sponsored by the Granite City History Group, is FREE and will be held at the Gertrude Smith House: 708 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC
